Guermantes bears an unusual literary connection: Marcel Proust immortalized the place in the third volume of “À la recherche du temps perdu” (“Du côté de Guermantes”); the volume was published by Gallimard in 1921. Proust visited Guermantes to thank the owners of the Château de Guermantes for allowing him to use the name Guermantes for his literary work.

Culture and History

The Château de Guermantes is partially protected as a historic monument; the listings date from August 9, 1944, and December 21, 1970. Its main construction phases span the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. After being resold in 2008, the Château de Guermantes was converted into a seminar center and is not open to visitors. Thus, at the same location, literary history linked to the name, dated heritage listings and a building with several historical development phases stand side by side.

Guermantes’s cultural identity remains closely connected with the château: Proust’s visit was intended to thank the owners who had allowed him to use the place name for his literary work. The building itself, however, is not currently one of the village’s visitor attractions.

Landscape and Trails

North of Guermantes, the ru de la Gondoire flows along the bottom of a small valley; it is a small tributary of the Marne. The official “Découverte de la vallée de la Gondoire” route follows the ru de la Gondoire through Chanteloup-en-Brie, Guermantes and Conches-sur-Gondoire.

The “De la Gondoire à la Brosse” route leads from a car park on Avenue Charles Péguy in Guermantes toward Conches-sur-Gondoire. The Mara-trail de Marne et Gondoire also passes through Guermantes; the village sets up a refreshment station there for runners in early June. The route options therefore include a route along the stream, a trail starting at a car park and a running course with a station in the village.

Hiking Options

Le Cairn de Guermantes offers various forms of hiking, including health walks, gentle or well-being-focused walks, walking tours and discovery hikes. Rando méli-mélo includes botanical or culinary walks and also offers classic and sporty hikes as well as Nordic walking. The formats mentioned therefore range from quiet and health-oriented activities to themed routes and more athletic options.

According to the municipality’s description, the Parcours de santé is a fitness and health trail offering opportunities for exercise and sport. Guermantes has numerous footpaths, which, according to the municipality’s description, also offer opportunities for exercise and sport.

Connections

Guermantes is served by bus route 2226 of the Marne-la-Vallée bus network. It connects the municipality with the stations at Bussy-Saint-Georges (RER A) and Lagny-Thorigny (TER P). This public transport connection adds two clearly named rail links to the local information and makes the connecting routes a separate part of travel planning.

When booking a holiday apartment in Guermantes, travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions may represent different selection criteria. They concern the timing, the type of accommodation offered and the conditions for changes—regardless of the château, Proust connection and hiking trails.

Other places in this selection include Cerneux, Château-Landon, Gressy, Le Pin, Boissy-Le-Châtel, Tousson, Fontenay-Trésigny and Arbonne-La-Forêt.
