Vaucluse combines mountain and lowland landscapes that you can explore on walks and hikes. For your planning, the topics can be considered individually and combined, depending on whether you want to focus on culture, landscapes, activities or water during your holiday.
Culture
In Avignon-Montfavet, Memento brings together the département’s archaeological service, departmental archives and museum storage facilities in an 11,000-square-metre cultural heritage centre. Memento is dedicated to preserving and presenting 3,000 years of history.
The facilities include temporary and permanent digital exhibitions, a 150-seat auditorium, educational spaces and an adjoining reading room. In Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, the Musée-bibliothèque François Pétrarque is dedicated to the Italian humanist and poet Petrarch; it is located in the surrounding area of the Vaucluse département.
The Musée du Cartonnage et de l’Imprimerie presents industrial expertise in packaging and printing. The Musée d’Histoire Jean Garcin 1939-1945 traces the history of the Second World War in Provence.
The historic centre of Avignon, with the Palais des papes, the episcopal ensemble and the Pont d’Avignon, is an exceptional example of medieval architecture. The Théâtre antique d’Orange is one of the best-preserved large Roman theatres, and the Arc de Triomphe d'Orange was built between 10 and 25.
In the surrounding area of the Vaucluse département are the Abbaye de Sénanque and the Hôtel-Dieu; the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Bon Secours is located near the département.
Nature
The ochre massif of the Luberon is protected and classified for its landscape, historical and picturesque character. The Grotte de Thouzon is located in the wider regional area surrounding the Vaucluse département.
Pié Rascas, L'ile aux castors and Fontaine de Vaucluse are located in the surrounding area of the Vaucluse département. The different spatial references provide you with a clear distinction between the nearby surroundings and the wider regional area.
Experiences
Vaucluse offers tourist routes focused on wine and lavender landscapes. Marked hiking trails lead to the summit of Mont Ventoux. Different themes and routes give you several starting points for planning your own day.
Stand-up paddleboarding, canoeing, kayaking and pedal boating are possible at Lac de Monteux. Lac du Paty is used for swimming and is also a waypoint on the GR de Pays Tour des Dentelles de Montmirail hiking trail.
Seven villages in Vaucluse are classified as Plus Beaux Villages de France. The Côtes du Luberon appellation roughly corresponds to the limestone massif of the Luberon and its foothills in Vaucluse.
When comparing holiday apartments in Vaucluse, check the travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions on the respective offer pages. You can consider these details separately from the question of whether culture, landscapes, hiking or water activities are the deciding factors for your trip.
