Nature and Landscape
The route Les plâtrières alternates between cultivated land and pine forests and runs alongside a gypsum quarry. The route climbs as it goes, offering views of the plain and the surrounding hills.
The circular trail La Gardy leads through the countryside towards Souleye. It combines bories and dry-stone walls with beautiful dry-stone structures on La Gardy hill, shaped by former terraces.
Vineyards, olive groves and cherry orchards characterise the cultivated landscape of Malemort-du-Comtat; 700 hectares are farmed in total.
Culture and History
In the historic village centre, old houses and arched gateways are grouped around the Église Notre Dame de Calvias. The church dates back to the 13th century. Inside, there is a gilded wooden altar with six statues from the 18th century by Jacques Bernus.
The Porte de la République dates back to the 12th century and marks the main entrance to the former walled village centre. The Porte Saint Félix dates back to the 13th century. It is home to a second covered washhouse and a fountain from the 19th century.
The Musée des outils agraires de Malemort du Comtat preserves agricultural equipment as evidence of the agricultural heritage and as a reminder of earlier generations. In addition, the museum offers a virtual 360-degree tour of its interior.
Local Produce and Traditions
The La Colombe mill offers visits, sales and tastings on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Using traditional methods, it produces cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil exclusively from the Aglandau olive variety.
Every year, on the last Sunday in June, Malemort-du-Comtat hosts the Fête du terroir et de la cerise.
