Puyméras lies north of Mont Ventoux on the border between the Vaucluse and Drôme départements. Fields, vineyards, olive groves and forests shape the typically Provençal landscape of Puyméras.
Culture
North of the village lies the Chapelle Saint Georges, surrounded by vineyards. The pilgrimage procession to the Chapelle Saint Georges takes place on the Sunday around 24 April and is accompanied by a costumed bravade with rifle shots.
The Chapelle Saint Flavien lies along the former road to Faucon and contains a polychrome altarpiece from the 17th century made using the plaster-stucco technique.
The Chapelle Saint Apollinaire is located in Puyméras’s present-day cemetery. During the Wars of Religion, it served as the parish church.
The Chapelle Notre Dame des Anges is located in the former hamlet of the Massif des Géants. Its crypt served as a burial place for the hamlet’s inhabitants; the chapel is said to have been built in 1663 by the inhabitants of the hamlet.
The four chapels in Puyméras continue to be used for annual pilgrimages. Near the ascent to the church, the Grande Fontaine of Puyméras is also located beside the village washhouse.
Wine
Puyméras’s wine-growing area extends across five municipalities as a regional entity, including Puyméras. The Côtes du Rhône Villages Puyméras appellation comprises exclusively red wines and was officially recognised in 2005.
