Saint-Martin-De-Castillon: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Saint-Martin-de-Castillon is situated on a hill overlooking the Grand Luberon. The surrounding landscape is characterised by vineyards, cherry trees, almond trees and lavender. The municipality has 2,318 hectares of forest, corresponding to a forest coverage rate of 60 percent.

Culture and History

The parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is of Romanesque origin and contains, among other things, a wooden statue of Christ dating from the 16th century. Another historical trace leads to the Saint-Placide votive chapel. It was built after the great plague of 1720, which had devastated the region; pilgrimages to Saint Roch took place there until the 1950s.

The Notre-Dame-de-Courennes Chapel is of Romanesque origin and was probably built on the remains of a Gallo-Roman temple. An annual pilgrimage tradition is also recorded for the chapel, during which the inhabitants of Saint-Martin-de-Castillon prayed for rain. The former Saint-Pierre Priory is a Romanesque complex that is now in ruins. In Le Boisset, the Church of Saint John the Baptist dates from the 17th century; it has an offset bell tower and a hexagonal apse.

There are four chapels in the town centre, which visitors can either visit or view from the outside. One chapel can be visited by prior appointment.

Landscape and Trails

Glorivette is designated as the site of a geological protected area in Saint-Martin-de-Castillon. There are a total of 46.5 kilometres of hiking trails in the municipality. Walks on foot, horse rides and cycling excursions are described in Saint-Martin-de-Castillon.

A historical walking tour has been established in Saint-Martin-de-Castillon, taking visitors through the town. An inconspicuous path from the D900 main road passes the medieval chapel, the cemetery and the ruins of the former Saint-Pierre Priory. The Notre-Dame-de-Courennes Chapel can be reached via a path that begins in front of the village of Berdine. A short, wooded path leads from the last left-hand bend before the town to the Saint-Placide votive chapel.
