Nature and circular trail

The Colorado Provençal is a former open-pit mine where ochre was extracted during the 19th and 20th centuries, and is classified as a historic natural monument. Its present-day landscapes are the result of human work and natural erosion. The “Tour du Colorado provençal” circular trail is 12.2 kilometres long and takes around four hours. It starts and ends at the car park in the centre of Rustrel. The paid “Parking des Mille couleurs – Colorado provençal” car park allows you to park close to the starting point of the hiking trails.

Culture and history

The Chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Anges and the ruins of its hermitage in Rustrel feature major construction phases from the 14th and 17th centuries. By decree dated 21 October 1986, the chapel and the ruins of its hermitage were listed as historic monuments. At the Château de Rustrel, one part is classified as a historic monument and another part is listed as a historic monument. The church of Rustrel was originally built around 1200 by the Bishop of Apt.

Local history

The Musée du moulin à huile in Rustrel is located in an 18th-century oil mill that remained in operation until the early 1930s. Visitors can still see the entire olive oil production process there, including the hoist, the oil filter, the boiler, the settling and storage containers, and the so-called “enfers”. The “Promenade de l'Eau” in the village of Rustrel provides an opportunity to discover the village’s fountains.
