Monieux lies at the entrance to the Gorges de la Nesque. The village is situated there on a cultivated plain where spelt is grown and lavender fields flourish.

Nature

The Gorges de la Nesque form a canyon approximately 20 kilometres long, which is more than 400 metres deep in some places. Because of their biological diversity, they are recognised as a Natura 2000 site.

Trails

The “MONIEUX - Les gorges de La Nesque” route crosses the Nesque at a ford and then climbs to the Chapelle Saint-Michel at an altitude of 624 metres. A circular hike near Monieux is 9 kilometres long and suitable for experienced hikers.

Several hiking trails allow visitors to explore the Mur de la Peste; one described trail runs near the Gorges de la Nesque. On the described route to the Mur de la Peste, all or part of the trail is off marked paths and requires good navigation skills.

Between Villes-sur-Auzon and Monieux, a scenic road runs through tunnels and along the rock face over arches.

Culture

The Chapelle Saint-Michel de Anesca is a Romanesque building from the 12th century beneath a large rock overhang. It can only be reached on foot.

The Église Saint-Pierre was built in the 12th century and retains Romanesque features, including a choir with an elegant octagonal dome.

The Chapelle Saint Roch was rebuilt in 1832 on a circular plan during a cholera epidemic. The Chapelle Saint Roch offers a very beautiful view of Monieux, is open all year round and is accessible for visits.

Monieux is home to the Musée de la Truffe du Ventoux, which presents the black truffle with a multisensory display, educational panels and films. A tour in Monieux equipped with educational panels presents the history of the village.

The Mur de la Peste is a 27-kilometre-long health-protection wall built from dry stone in the 18th century, extending from Monieux to Les Taillades on the Durance.

The Moulin Virgile in Monieux is an example of a horizontal water mill with a so-called rod wheel dating from the 18th century. The Moulin Virgile was the last of seven mills built in Monieux.

Orientation

The Belvédère de Monieux offers a panoramic view of the Rocher du Cire.

The Plan d'eau de Monieux is suitable for fishing and picnics. Swimming is prohibited in the Plan d'eau de Monieux.
