Nature

The small Cédraie de Cabrières comprises Atlas cedars (Cedrus atlantica), which originate from the mountains of the Maghreb and were introduced from 1860 onwards as part of the reforestation of southern France.

The Mur de la Peste near Cabrières-d’Avignon provides refuge for numerous animal species. At the same time, it is a dry-stone wall built in 1720 to protect the Comtat Venaissin from the plague epidemic that came from Marseille.

There are picnic areas and viewpoints overlooking the Calavon Valley and Mont Ventoux. Numerous marked paths in this forest are suitable for walking, running and contemplative leisure.

Culture

Certain parts of the Château de Cabrières have been listed as a Monument historique by decree of 23 April 1979. The protection covers the façades and roofs, two vaulted rooms on the first and second floors of the west tower, and the surrounding wall with its corner towers. The Château de Cabrières dates from the 11th or 12th century and served as a refuge for the Vaudois in spring 1545. It is privately owned and can only be visited during the Journées du Patrimoine in September.

The Musée de la Lavande Luberon displays a collection of red copper stills for lavender dating from 1626 to the present day. With this collection and other objects documenting the history, traditions and culture of lavender, it preserves Provençal lavender expertise. The museum offers an immersive visitor experience with an audio guide, projections, guided tours, activities and creative workshops.
