Culture and History

Pertuis is home to the Église Saint-Nicolas, which was built between the 15th and 16th centuries. Its architecture is typical of late-medieval Provence. The church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of boatmen – presumably because of Pertuis’s port and ferry on the Durance.

The Tour Saint-Jacques is the last remaining tower of Pertuis’s former fortifications. Le Donjon is one of the rare examples of medieval military architecture in Provence.

The Chapelle de la Charité was built in 1719 and combines Baroque and Neoclassical styles. It is the only surviving part of Pertuis’s former Hôpital de la Charité and hosts exhibitions and concerts.

The so-called House of Queen Jeanne is a small Mannerist palace dating from the late 16th century.

At the eastern exit of the town, the Lavoir Notre-Dame is a washhouse built into the rock. It was constructed in 1882 in the town wall near the former Notre-Dame gate.

The present-day fountain and washhouse of the Lavoir Saint-Jacques was built in 1851 by the municipal mason Louis Chaffard. A covered washhouse with a semicircular basin made of hewn stone adjoins the fountain.

Routes and Landscapes

The two-day Le Pays d’Aigues à vélo route begins and ends at Pertuis SNCF railway station. The western loop of Le Pays d’Aigues à vélo begins at the Pertuis tourist office on Place Mirabeau in the old town.

Le Pays d’Aigues à vélo runs between vineyards, olive groves and picturesque villages in the southern Luberon. The western loop passes through vineyards and by châteaux in the southern Luberon.
