Culture and History
Flassan’s former oil mill was built in 1633, operated until 1925 and now houses the town hall offices. The cultural heritage site “Les charbonnières de la Combe de Canaud” includes the remains of charcoal kilns dating from the 18th century.
Tourreus is a fortified protohistoric settlement with stone towers and rock shelters. Ceramic remains and a human skull dated to 3,000 BC were discovered in the Notre-Dame Grotto inside a stone tower at Tourreus.
The St Jean Chapel is located at an altitude of 1,040 metres on the foothills of Mont Ventoux and is the only one that is still visited. The Saint-Jean-du-Désert Chapel has been documented since 1154 under the name Sancti Johannis in territorio Villelonga in Monte Ventorio. The fountains and washhouses of Flassan attract painters and photographers all year round. The Saint-Jean du Désert Chapel is the highest of the chapels mentioned.
Landscape and Trails
The Combe de Canaud is one of the wild gorges of Mont Ventoux and a former route used by shepherds and charcoal burners. The GR 91 long-distance hiking trail runs from Flassan towards Villes-sur-Auzon.
The Bédoin tourist office offers a moderately difficult 9-kilometre hiking trail starting in Flassan, taking around three hours and covering 340 metres of elevation gain.
