Culture
Château de Lacoste, including its courtyards and dry moats, is listed as a “Monument historique”; the listing was made by decree on 21 August 1992. The restored Château de Lacoste retains its ruinous appearance and historical significance and is associated with the literary work of the Marquis de Sade.
The Church of Saint Trophime in Lacoste dates from the 12th to the 13th century and retains visible Romanesque elements in the apse, on the north wall, and in the interior.
The Portail de la Garde dates from the 14th to the 15th century and was probably rebuilt in the second half of the 16th century together with the village fortifications.
La Maison Basse looks back on a history spanning eight centuries and served, among other things, as a farmhouse, inn, stopping place for bear handlers, as well as a coach house and venue associated with the Marquis de Sade.
The Musée SCAD Lacoste presents the history of Lacoste from its origins to its development into the European campus of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). SCAD FASH Lacoste is a fashion and film museum with an exhibition program running throughout the year. It has two buildings for fashion exhibitions, one on Rue Basse and one on Rue Saint Trophime, and showcases creations by renowned couturiers twice a year.
At the SCAD Alumni Atelier, visitors can observe the working processes of SCAD graduates based in Lacoste and learn more about their creative approaches. Studio Bee presents a curated exhibition of fashion designs by SCAD graduates.
Lacoste’s paved main street, known as the “Rue des Artistes,” is home to artists’ studios and galleries. Lacoste’s medieval vaulted rooms host productions that combine contemporary art and antiques.
La Promenade des Sculptures in Lacoste was established in 2022 with ten monumental works created by SCAD students and has been open to the public since its inauguration on 16 October 2022.
Getting Around
The village of Lacoste can be explored on foot. Free, shaded parking spaces are available in the landscaped car park next to the cemetery.
A 3.2 km walking route leads from Lacoste’s historic village centre to Abbaye de Saint Hilaire on the border between Lacoste and Ménerbes. From Lacoste, cyclists can follow the Voie Verte du Calavon.
