Landscape
From the 12th century onwards, dry-stone terraces without mortar were built on the slopes of the two valleys of Saumane-de-Vaucluse and planted with olive trees. The Mourre de la Belle Étoile is traditionally associated with the cultivation of truffle oaks and olive trees.
The Valescure site in Saumane-de-Vaucluse is under contractual protection and is managed by the Conservatoire des Espaces Naturels (CEN). The forest massif of Saumane-de-Vaucluse is designated as a biodiversity reservoir.
Culture and History
The Château de Saumane combines a 14th-century cardinal’s palace with a Renaissance residence in the form of a fortified bastion. The Marquis de Sade spent his childhood at the Château de Saumane-de-Vaucluse. With all its built and undeveloped parts, the Château de Saumane-de-Vaucluse was fully classified as a Monument historique by decree of 7 January 2020.
On the slopes of Saumane-de-Vaucluse there are bories: small dry-stone huts used as agricultural shelters, as well as larger structures used as sheepfolds. Erosion has created so-called baumes, or caves, in the rocks of Saumane-de-Vaucluse; these have been inhabited since the Neolithic period and were later developed into cave dwellings.
The Église Saint-Trophime was formerly a priory of Sénanque Abbey. It has a distinctive bell tower with a double arcade and a 15th-century bell.
Trails and Nature Observation
On the trails of Saumane-de-Vaucluse, visitors can hike through a dry landscape along kilometres of dry-stone walls and through numerous, often steep combes and small valleys. The Les Trois Luisants route leads to a former millstone quarry and dry-stone huts.

The municipality of Saumane-de-Vaucluse is responsible for implementing the Atlas de la biodiversité communale in its territory in cooperation with the Conservatoire d’Espaces Naturels Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur (CEN PACA).

Seven wines are tasted at Domaine TréluS. Domaine TréluS in Saumane-de-Vaucluse offers on-site tours and wine tastings accompanied by the cellar master, focusing on soil, climate, grape varieties and ageing methods.
Golf de Saumane has a practice facility and an 18-hole course. It was designed by Jean Garaïalde in 1989 and follows the course of the Canal de Carpentras as well as the hilly landscape with rocky escarpments and wooded areas.
