History and Townscape

Viens is a medieval village surrounded by fortification walls dating from the 11th and 13th centuries.

The Porte sarrazine forms the entrance to the historic town of Viens. The square bell tower of the Church of Viens is classified as a historic monument.

In the Le Puy district, there is a very old olive mill that probably dates from 1572, during the reign of Charles IX. It is opened every year for the European Heritage Days.

The present building of the Chapelle Saint-Ferréol was probably constructed in the second half of the 17th century. The chapel is located below Viens, towards the Oppedette Gorges. Every summer, it hosts the “Ferréofolies” programme with concerts, exhibitions and conferences.

The bread oven has been restored several times, but retains its original shape and is considered a unique example in the region.

Nature and Trails

The fossil footprint slab of Viens is one of the 28 sites in the Luberon Geological Nature Reserve. Covering an area of approximately 400 square metres, it contains almost 200 depressions corresponding to the footprints of mammals.

The circular trail to the Dalle à empreintes is very easy, 4.5 kilometres long and takes about an hour and a half.

Around Viens, signposted circular trails for hiking, horse riding and mountain biking are recommended, including the GR6.

The Viens municipal market takes place every Wednesday morning throughout the year.
