Althen-Des-Paluds: Holiday Apartments and Vacation Homes

The Moulin des Gaffins is a former factory for producing madder powder, dating from 1882, and has been listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments since 2016.

Culture and History

The larger Notre-Dame de l’Assomption church was completed in 1862. Its 35-metre-high bell tower is one of the tallest in the Vaucluse department.

Since 1887, Althen-des-Paluds’ town hall has been housed in a former 18th-century church; its campanile is listed as a historic monument. Saint-Albergaty is the oldest hamlet in Althen-des-Paluds and features an unusual mix of Renaissance and 19th-century architecture.

The Saint-Albergaty bridge dates from 1589 and forms part of the irrigation system laid out in the Renaissance for the plain. A statue of Jean Althen stands in the town hall square, commemorating the history of madder cultivation.

Nature

The Sorgue de Velleron is one of the waterways surrounding Althen-des-Paluds. The Pont Naquet was built over this waterway in 1845; fishing takes place at the bridge.

Les Sorgues Vertes offers themed walks focusing on flowers and birds along the banks of the Sorgues, beside canals, or at the former Saint-Albergaty paper mill. Pleasant walks are possible in the Jardin de Montecarlo in Althen-des-Paluds.

Local Life

At Pom Bio Berger, visitors can meet farmers and discover apples, honey, and cider as part of the farmers’ market “Eté à la ferme – Marché Pom Bio Berger”.
