The Château de Gordes combines the architecture of a medieval fortress with that of a Renaissance residence and now houses art exhibitions. The château is protected under the French heritage protection system “Monuments historiques”: by decree of 4 July 1931, it was classified as a historic monument, while the round château tower was listed by decree of 28 October 1949.
The Village des Bories is classified as a historic monument and organized as a museum of rural residential culture. The Village des Bories Museum displays traditional objects and tools, as well as documentation on the history of Gordes, the bories, and dry-stone architecture.
The Abbaye de Sénanque, which is considered a monastery, is located in the vicinity of Gordes. It was founded in the 12th century and is still inhabited by a community of Cistercian monks. The Masses and religious services celebrated by the monks of the Abbaye de Sénanque are open to the public; the abbey explicitly recommends guided tours. A visit includes the abbey church, the cloister, the chapter house, and the valley’s natural surroundings.
