Mondragon: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

A distinctive natural area in Mondragon is the Marais de l’Île Vieille. The area is designated as a ZNIEFF area and a Natura 2000 site. It lies where the vieux Rhône and the Donzère–Mondragon Canal meet and is considered one of the region’s notable wetlands because of its rich biodiversity. The Marais de l’Île Vieille is also an important resting and migratory hub for birds.

For hiking in Mondragon, the Circuit de Vachères is designated as a named hiking trail. The Circuit de l’Île Vieille loop has very gentle inclines, runs across flat terrain and is particularly suitable for all-terrain pushchairs as well as people with reduced mobility.

Culture and History

Mondragon Castle dates back to the 12th century. Two towers and traces of the battlements of four further towers have been preserved. It was first destroyed in 1217 and then destroyed a second time by the Huguenots in 1562; since then, it has remained in the ruined state known today.

The Chapelle Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens in Mondragon was listed as a Monument historique by decree of 20 May 1997. Inside, there is a fresco from the beginning of the 13th century depicting the Virgin Mary in Majesty. The chapel is accessed via the D152, followed by the D12 and then the small road towards Les Fonts Perrots. No regular masses are held there; occasional openings are announced in the parish newsletter.

The Chapelle Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens in Derboux is a Romanesque chapel with a single nave and a semi-domed apse. The Chapelle Saint-Jacques was built in the Middle Ages outside Mondragon’s fortified enclosure and is located on the main square of the village of Mondragon.

The Hôtel de Suze in Mondragon dates from the first quarter of the 16th century. Its façade and roof have been partially protected as a Monument historique since 28 October 1949.

The programme of the Fête médiévale du Drac includes taverns, performances, wooden games, an educational farm, a craft market, camps, exhibitions, a large fireworks display and a traditional night-time torchlight procession with more than 400 participants and their floats.

Routes and Transport

The RN7 national road passes through Mondragon. Mondragon’s transport infrastructure also includes the SNCF Paris–Marseille railway line.
