Culture and history

The Portail Saint-Jean is a legendary rock; it is said to form the entrance to an imaginary cave guarded by a Golden Goat. The Notre-Dame-du-Groseau chapel dates back to the 11th century. Connected to it is a larger building with a circular interior, which is classified as a historic monument.

The Calvaire de Malaucène comprises 14 small oratories depicting the Stations of the Cross. Along the Route des Remparts, the former fortification walls were reused in the construction of many houses. The monastery of the Notre-Dame-du-Groseau chapel served as the summer residence of Clément V, the first Avignon pope. The fortified church of Malaucène features majestic architecture and an interior.

Nature

The Groseau spring emerges from the rock and flows into a wide basin with a clear bottom. It was used for irrigation and once powered up to 17 mills. Its surroundings lie between meadows and forests and invite walkers to enjoy their coolness and tranquillity on warm days.

Things to do

The GR de Pays Massif du Ventoux passes through Malaucène from the Chapelle Saint Roch to the Chapelle de Piaud, passing by the Groseau spring along the way. A guided cycling tour starts in the centre of Malaucène, leads to the first hairpin bends of Mont Ventoux and returns to Malaucène; it runs entirely on paved roads, is approximately 22 km long and has around 450 m of elevation gain.

In Malaucène and its surroundings, there are numerous starting points for hikes, sightseeing bike tours and horseback rides.

At La Chambette in Malaucène, L'Atelier d'Hippolyte offers a walk through apricot and pomegranate orchards, ending with a tasting of its own products.
