The Château de La Tour d’Aigues is a Renaissance building. Following the fires of 1780 and 1792, ruins, façades and restored cellars have been preserved. The restored rooms display partially preserved flooring from the French Renaissance, as well as white and decorated faience from the manufactory of Baron Jean-Baptiste Jérôme de Bruny. The castle courtyard can also be explored using explanatory panels that describe the buildings according to their historical periods.
Culture
The Musée des Faïences now has more than 2,000 inventoried objects. It preserves ceramics dating from the Renaissance to the Revolution, which were recovered during archaeological excavations at the Château de La Tour d’Aigues.
The Eglise Notre Dame de Romégas is already mentioned in a papal bull dating from 1096. Its oldest surviving parts probably date from the 13th century; these include the nave, the apse and the first chapel to the right of the choir. This chapel contains the sculptural group “Mise au tombeau du Christ”.
The Chapelle Saint Christophe was built in 1558 by Jacques Jehan on behalf of Jean Louis Nicolas de Bouliers. A local brotherhood and an annual pilgrimage tradition were established there. To visit the chapel, the local parish priest should be contacted.
In the old village, Rue d’Eole is located on the site of the former street of the potters’ workshops.
Nature
La Tour d’Aigues lies on the banks of the small Eze River. The municipality is also home to Forest Sensation, a treetop adventure park in a two-hectare wooded natural area between vineyards and forests.
