Landscape and History
Oppède-le-Vieux is located on a rocky spur in a landscape characterised by forests, gorges, rocks, vineyards, olive trees and oak trees. The village comprises medieval houses and Renaissance houses. The site also contains the ruins of a medieval castle.
Paths and Buildings
Oppède-le-Vieux cannot be reached by car. From the Place de la Croix in Vieil-Oppède, Notre-Dame Dalidon can be reached via stone-paved calades. Those who climb the calade lane to the summit of Oppède-le-Vieux are rewarded with a 360-degree panoramic view.
The Maison Gabrielli consists of four medieval houses built around a courtyard in the 13th and 14th centuries.
Botany and Olives
The Sentier Botanique runs between the Oppède-le-Vieux car park and the old village, passing local and Mediterranean plant species. The landscaped garden of the terraces of Sainte-Cécile is laid out on fifteen dry-stone-wall terraces as a botanical and designed garden. Covering 1.6 hectares, it contains more than forty tree and shrub species typical of the region.
The Sentier de l'Olive is an easy 2.2-kilometre walk lasting 30 minutes and marked in light green. It crosses terraces planted with olive trees and provides information about traditional olive cultivation, its varieties, mills and products.
Stone and Craftsmanship
The stone known as “Estaillades” is now extracted in open-pit quarries. The compact, fine-grained white blocks are used by stonemasons, sculptors and in construction for historic and funerary monuments as well as sculptures.
Those choosing Oppède-le-Vieux as a holiday destination may be planning to rent an apartment.
