In Bollène, several historical testimonies meet a site carved into the rock and a route to Romanesque religious buildings. Those who have chosen Bollène as their destination may perhaps wish to rent a holiday apartment here.
Culture and history
The Collégiale Saint Martin has been classified as a historic monument since 1909. Its special features include a pointed-arch entrance portal dating from 1505 and the former defensive tower of the priory. Inside stands a gilded wooden high altar commissioned in 1656 from the sculptor Philippe Mézangeau, who came from Bollène.
The Maison Cardinale hosted Pope Clement V in 1311. The building has been classified as a historic monument since 1947, was probably built in the middle of the 11th century, and still has its stone roof as well as walls more than one metre thick.
The former Ursuline convent in Bollène also preserves a remarkable piece of furnishings: an altar carved by Jean-Baptiste Mézangeau and gilded with gold leaf. The Chapelle de l'hôpital in Bollène is a historic religious monument; visits to it are overseen by the association for Bollène's ecclesiastical heritage.
Nature and panoramic views
Above Bollène lies the Village troglodytique de Barry, a spectacular site carved into the rock. A walk there combines heritage, nature and exceptional panoramic views. Following several years of renovation and safety work, the Village troglodytique de Barry is accessible again.
On two wheels
The “VTT n°2 – Boucle des Chapelles” route leads between wooded hills and agricultural plains to well-preserved Romanesque religious buildings. It allows cyclists to gain elevation and explore the history conveyed by the architecture of the chapels.
