Culture and History

The Château de Mirabeau dates back to the period when the village was established at the foot of a fortified rocky spur. In 1985, Mirabeau served as a filming location for Claude Berri’s film Manon des sources.

The Chapelle Sainte-Madeleine was listed as a protected monument in 1928 and restored in 1948. It is located on the banks of the Durance near the Pont de Mirabeau, at the entrance to the Défilé de Canteperdrix, and was probably built between 1165 and 1178. The oldest parts of the Saint-Pierre Church date from the 12th century.

The surviving neo-Romanesque portals of the Pont de Mirabeau suspension bridge were added to the supplementary inventory of historic monuments in 1988. The Pont de Mirabeau is located at the Défilé de Canteperdrix, also known as the Défilé de Mirabeau. This narrowing of the Durance Valley lies between the municipalities of Mirabeau and Jouques; here, the Durance flows between steep limestone cliffs.

The Cabestan du port de Mirabeau is a winch with a vertical axis that was formerly used to help boats cross the Durance when the current was too strong. On the Place de la Fontaine there is a circular basin with spouting tritons, as well as a square pillar, a cylindrical column and a finial topped with a sphere.

Activities and Trails

Pont-Mirabeau in Mirabeau is a sport climbing area with 30 routes ranging in difficulty from 4c to 6b. The GR9 runs from Mirabeau to Cucuron over the ridges of the Luberon and is 45 km long.

The Foulées de Mirabeau is a recurring running event, with a 4th edition in 2024, a 5th edition in 2025 and an edition in 2026. Les Grands Jardins offer space for picnics and for children to play.

Wine and Sightseeing

The former cellar of the Château de Clapier contains 12 wine barrels from the 19th century. The Château de Clapier in Mirabeau offers wine tastings, self-guided visits with a treasure hunt, as well as guided tours for groups.

Practical Information

The Saint-Pierre Church is closed; however, visitors can collect the key from the town hall. The Château de Mirabeau is privately owned and is not normally open for visits. Once a year, the owners open the château courtyard for an evening musical event with an audience.
