Maine-Et-Loire: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Maine-et-Loire stretches along the Loire, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and combines cultural heritage, nature and winegrowing. The Loire Valley from Sully-sur-Loire to Chalonnes-sur-Loire in Maine-et-Loire has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 30 November 2000; the inscription recognises an exceptional cultural landscape along the Loire.

Nature

The Maine-Loire Confluence and Angevin Hills site covers more than 2,000 hectares. It includes the Loire and Maine river landscapes, the vineyards of Savennières and historic sites. Distributed throughout Maine-et-Loire are 89 sensitive natural areas, associated with six types of landscape.

The Natura 2000 section of the Loire Valley from Ponts-de-Cé to Montsoreau extends for approximately 53 kilometres and covers approximately 9,400 hectares as well as 24 municipalities in the east of Maine-et-Loire. It provides a habitat for more than 30 threatened or protected bird species, including common terns and ospreys.

The Joreau regional nature reserve combines 92 hectares of woodland with a 7-hectare pond and nearly 700 species in approximately 20 habitats. The area is open to the public for hiking, fishing and walks around the pond and in the forest.

Culture and history

Maine-et-Loire has nearly 800 buildings classified or registered as historic monuments. In addition, more than 6,500 classified or registered works of art are located at over 700 conservation sites.

Anjou has nearly 1,200 châteaux, including fortresses, Renaissance châteaux and underground heritage sites between Angers and Saumur. The Château d'Angers houses the Tenture de l’Apocalypse; the fortifications offer panoramic views.

Getting around

The Bouchemaine–Chalonnes-sur-Loire stage of La Loire à Vélo is a 20.33-kilometre route classified as suitable for beginners and families.

Carrots, garlic, onions and shallots are produced in the Authion Valley. Asparagus, green beans, artichokes, lettuce, kiwis, blueberries and strawberries grow in the Saumur area.

The Bioparc de Doué-la-Fontaine is located in a 17-hectare troglodytic setting. It is home to more than 2,000 animals from 130 species, as well as underground galleries and large aviaries.
