Geographical location
White tuffeau stone and slate are the traditional building materials of the village. The exceptional wildlife and plant life of the Loire can be seen at the Cale de Trèves.
Culture and history
The local caves bear witness to the formerly important, now abandoned extraction of tuffeau stone and to the later cultivation of mushrooms. House façades and weather vanes preserve symbols from the time when boatmen used flat-bottomed gabares on the Loire.
The Tour de Trèves is the only surviving remnant of a fortified castle built in the 15th century. The remains of a Gallo-Roman settlement near La Fouchardière date from around AD 30. The Temple du Villiers is a Gallo-Roman temple from the 2nd century and can be seen on the heritage trail of Chênehutte-Trèves-Cunault.
The Prieurale Notre-Dame de Cunault was built between the 11th and 13th centuries from tuffeau stone. A polychrome stone Pietà from the 16th century can be viewed in the Prieurale Notre-Dame de Cunault. Notre-Dame de la Prée des Tuffeaux contains two wooden votive offerings: one was donated by stonemasons and one by boatmen.
La Colombière in Préban is considered to have been the former location of the Musée Gustave Pimienta.
Trails
The “Entre Loire et coteaux” circular hiking trail between Trèves and Chênehutte is 9 km long, takes 2 hours and 15 minutes, and runs through hilly, wooded terrain along the Loire and the upper slope. It begins in a car park on the banks of the Loire opposite the Tour de Trèves.
The heritage trail runs along Rue A. Sarazin. It leads to the Ermitage Saint-Jean.
