Nueil-sur-Layon is a wine-growing commune in the Layon Valley between Angers and Saumur. The town belongs to the Layon wine-growing region, which is known for its sweet white wines.

Wine and landscape
Local winegrowers welcome visitors to their vineyards for tastings and cellar tours. The Domaine de la Clartière vineyard covers 30 hectares and has been passed down from father to son for four generations. Six grape varieties are cultivated there, producing at least seven Appellations d’Origine Contrôlée wines.
Nueil-sur-Layon has several signposted circular hiking trails through the vineyards and along paths through the surrounding countryside.

The Route des Vins – Vignoble et Patrimoine du Haut-Layon is a 66 km circular wine tourism route through the vineyards of the Haut-Layon. It leads to cellars, châteaux, troglodyte sites, manor houses and small villages, bringing the cultural heritage and vineyards of the Haut-Layon to life.
Culture and history
The present parish church of Saint-Hilaire was built in 1887 and 1888 by the architect Alfred Tessier after the former church had been demolished. Its origins date back to the 12th century; after a fire in 1581, it was partially rebuilt. The church of Nueil-sur-Layon is considered worth seeing.
A notable episode in the town’s history is also associated with the church: twelve residents of Nueil-sur-Layon locked themselves in the bell tower and defended themselves there with rifles; the church and bell tower were set on fire.
The Fête de la Quasimodo is celebrated in Nueil-sur-Layon every year in June. The commune also has seven châteaux from different periods; all are privately owned and inhabited.
