Culture

The Gallo-Roman amphitheatre of Mazerolles in Gennes was built at the beginning of the 2nd century AD. It features an educational trail with eight information panels and has been protected as a historic monument since 1986.

At the foot of the Church of Saint-Eusèbe is the Mémorial des Cadets de Saumur. It contains 17 graves of soldiers who fell in Gennes and the Saumurois region. Another megalithic monument is the Dolmen de la Pagerie: its capstone is almost 1.5 metres thick, and it also belongs to the Angevin type.

Trails

The GR3 long-distance hiking trail passes through Gennes. The “Les Chemins de Joreau” trail-running route starts at the Parking du 19 mars car park in Gennes. It is 13.9 kilometres long and has positive and negative elevation gains of 159 metres each.

For cyclists, the “Sur la piste des mégalithes et troglodytes” route starts at Place du 19 mars in Gennes.

Nature

The Étang de Joreau and the surrounding woodland are designated as a regional nature reserve. At least 47 species of dragonfly have been observed in the Étang de Joreau area.
