Culture
The Chapelle de la Bernardière has an oak structure that probably dates from the late 15th century; in 1771, it was blessed under the patronage of Saint John the Baptist. “La Grande Pierre Levée” is a Neolithic menhir.
The present-day Saint-Macaire church was designed in the Neo-Gothic style. It received a significant organ in 1925; the Gloton organ was restored in 2019.
History
The town’s industrial past is closely linked to shoemaking. From 1927, the Pasquier factory on Rue Pasteur had shoe-lasting machines and focused on producing leather shoes and sandals. The Pasquier shoe factory evolved from manufacturing and selling wooden shoes and galoshes to producing slippers.
A second building belonging to the Repussard-Chupin shoe factory was constructed between 1933 and 1934 and equipped with one of the first assembly lines in the region. The SARL “Repussard-Chupin” had already been founded in 1925 by Auguste Repussard and Georges Chupin.
The metre-gauge Beaupréau–Cholet railway line “Le Petit-Anjou”, which opened in 1889, also contributed to the industrialisation of Saint-Macaire-en-Mauges. The line was closed in 1948.
