Le Mesnil-En-Vallée: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Le Mesnil-en-Vallée lies set back from the Loire, with its town centre below a plateau suitable for agriculture, polyculture and fruit growing. The town centre offers wide panoramic views of the Loire. The Thau, an old Loire channel, winds through the valley, with meadows that are frequently flooded in winter.

Nature and trails

The Grand’Fosse leisure area is located on the Thau. It is accessible year-round, except during winter flooding, and is used by anglers. The site is suitable for family picnics. Directly on the Loire, a natural swimming area is set up on the sandbanks in summer.

The GR3 Loire hiking trail crosses Le Mesnil-en-Vallée. The Via Sancti Martini also passes through the town centre. The “Des Moulins à la Vigne” circular trail starts at the car park of Le Mesnil-en-Vallée town hall and offers panoramic views over the Thau valley.

Culture and history

The Notre-Dame parish church in Le Mesnil-en-Vallée was probably founded before the 11th century. The present church was rebuilt between 1839 and 1843 by Sébastien-Michel Dellêtre and was this architect’s first work in the Mauges-sur-Loire area.

East of the town centre, near the cemetery on a slight rise, stands the Notre-Dame de la Salette chapel. It was built in 1880 in the Neo-Gothic style. Its altar is decorated with a sculptural group depicting the apparition of the Virgin Mary to the young shepherds of La Salette. The burial chapel of the Chauveau family was built in 1821; it has a single-nave interior and a slate campanile.

The Château de la Bretèche was probably built in the 17th century on older medieval foundations. Part of its park, which covers more than 7.2 hectares and is completely enclosed by walls, is now a nature and landscape conservation area. The Château de Vaugirault is a Neoclassical château dating from the mid-19th century. Its estate includes a park of around 22 hectares, a chapel, ancillary buildings and agricultural buildings.

The mills are also part of the local heritage. The Moulin du Chêne-Vert is a tower windmill built around 1841 and stands at one of the highest points in the municipality of Le Mesnil-en-Vallée. The Moulin du Pinot No. 3 is the only one of the three Pinot or Pineau mills recorded in the 1827 land register that is still standing; it was very probably built in 1763.
