Culture and history

The Porte Guerchoise is a rectangular gate tower on the western side of the remains of Châtelais’s fortifications. It was protected as a historic monument by decree of 9 December 1964.

Remains of the fortifications of Châtelais are visible at three locations in the town.

The Church of Saint-Pierre in Châtelais houses the Vierge de Pitié, a soft limestone sculpture in the northern transept. The CAOA dates it to the 16th century.

The Musée archéologique - Châtelais displays worked stones, flints, bronze axes and daggers, Gallo-Roman coins, and Merovingian sarcophagi found in the surrounding area. The museum presents local history from the Neolithic period to the Middle Ages.

ARCS offers a cultural and historical tour of Conbaristum, the Latin name of the municipality of Châtelais.

Nature and trails

The Circuit de Châtelais starts in Châtelais and is a 15.5 km, yellow-marked hiking trail of moderate difficulty, with a walking time of approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes. It follows paths through varied landscapes and natural habitats. From a ridge marking the boundary between Maine-et-Loire and Mayenne, the circular route offers views of the Mayenne.
