Culture and history

Notre-Dame is the third religious building to have stood on this site. It was preceded by a wooden chapel dating from around 1000 and a church from the 12th century.

The Renaissance-style bell tower of Notre-Dame was completed in 1542. The church has 41 stained-glass windows featuring 652 figures, mainly depicting the life of the Virgin Mary. They are a significant work by the Parisian stained-glass artist Edouard Didron.

The market halls have stood at what is now Place Jeanne-de-Laval since the 14th century and were a trading centre, including for the 1842 hemp market. Today, the market halls in the town centre are used for exhibitions, cultural events and municipal activities.

In the 11th century, the Count of Anjou, Foulque Nerra, had a castle built at this strategic location. René I of Anjou added a fourth, octagonal tower to the castle, known as the Tour du Roi René. After the fortress was damaged during the Wars of Religion, it was dismantled in the 17th century. Its materials were reused to reinforce the town fortifications and build the Couvent des Récollets.

The Musée Joseph Denais is a cabinet of curiosities founded in 1905 by the historian and journalist Joseph Denais.

As part of the [a]museums project, ongoing family activities such as puzzles, charades and treasure hunts are planned at the Musée Joseph Denais.

The Abbaye Saint-Maur de Glanfeuil is located in the vicinity of Beaufort-en-Vallée. The Château de Baugé is also nearby. Further afield in the Beaufort-en-Vallée region are the Château Pignerolles and the Château Echarbot.

Landscape and trails

The Sentier nature du Couasnon runs through a 20-hectare wetland along the Couasnon; starting points are Beaufort and Gée. The Sentier de randonnée marais et patrimoine hiking trail connects Gée and Beaufort-en-Vallée and passes through preserved cultural heritage and the valley’s natural landscape.

The Vélo dans la Vallée de l’Authion cycle route runs between the Loire and the Authion marshes. It is a 44-kilometre circular route that begins at Chemin du Canada on Route de la Ménitré.
