Culture and history

The first skirmish connected with the Battle of Le Vieil-Baugé took place at Pont-Godeau; the battle then raged in the streets of Le Vieil-Baugé and along the banks of the Couasnon. The battle took place on 22 March 1421. English troops faced French forces allied with the Scots; the Duke of Clarence was among the casualties.

The scope of the AVAP was extended to the centre of Le Vieil-Baugé and the Couasnon valley in order to ensure continuity and include the various remarkable sites worthy of protection.

The Château de Montivert is located in Le Vieil-Baugé. The late Neo-Gothic château was built between 1893 and 1895 and was inspired by the Angevin residences from the time of King René. The Logis de Clairefontaine in Le Vieil-Baugé is classified as a historic monument; its main construction phases date from the 13th and 15th centuries, and it was classified on 28 December 1984.

The Church of Saint-Symphorien in Le Vieil-Baugé has a twisted and leaning bell tower built in 1856; the cause of this twisting remains a mystery. The church combines architectural periods from the 11th to the 19th century, and its choir is designed in the Plantagenet style. It can be visited by groups of 20 to 40 people.

Yellow markers for the “Pas de la Mule” lead through the picturesque lanes of Le Vieil-Baugé, lined with houses dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. The “Circuit historique et patrimoine du Pas de la Mule” walking route begins in Le Vieil-Baugé. The “Pas de la Mule” also forms part of the legend that grew up around these battles.

Trails and waterways

The La Butte de Rancan circular route is an easy, family-friendly 4.8 km hiking trail that starts and ends in Le Vieil-Baugé. Access is via the car park at Place de l'église in Le Vieil-Baugé.
