History

A village was founded around 2000 BC at the present-day site of Petit Montrevault. The discovery of a gold vein had already prompted this settlement. In 57 BC, the Romans came to Saint-Pierre-Montlimart and mined iron ore there.

The gold mines of Saint-Pierre-Montlimart resumed operations in 1905 and attracted numerous foreign workers. Between 1905 and 1952, when mining ended, 10.4 tonnes of gold were extracted at the Mines de la Bellière.

The Quatre-Routes crossroads marks the entrance to the former parish of Petit-Montrevault. The Hôtel du Parc was built in 1910 and occasionally provided accommodation for investors, administrators and mine suppliers.

Geographical setting

To the east, Saint-Pierre-Montlimart is bordered by the incised Charruau stream, a tributary of the Èvre.

Routes

On 4 September 1899, the Petit-Anjou began serving Montrevault and Saint-Pierre-Montlimart. The 6.7 km historic walk forms two walking loops between the town centres of Montrevault and Saint-Pierre-Montlimart and includes the railway viaduct of the Petit Anjou.
