Saint-Georges-des-Sept-Voies: Holiday apartments and holiday homes
In Saint-Georges-des-Sept-Voies, a rich megalithic heritage combines with striking buildings and unusual art. The capstone of the Dolmen de la Bajoulière measures more than 7 metres on each side and is up to 70 to 90 centimetres thick. Its weight is estimated at 70 tonnes. The dolmen may have served as a chapel in the 12th century.
Culture
In its present form, the parish church of the Prieuré de Saint-Georges displays architectural features from the 12th and 13th centuries and has a two-storey Romanesque bell tower. The listed wind turbine at the Prieuré de Saint-Georges dates from 1888 and 1889.
The Moulin de la Lussière is one of two surviving, operational and accessible Cavier-type windmills in the Gennes-Val-de-Loire area. The mill, dating from 1836, has an underground cellar in a tuffeau cavity. Its revolving roof once again has sails with white wooden slats that can be opened using the Berton system.
The area around the villages of Saint-Georges-des-Sept-Voies, Le Thoureil and Gennes has a remarkable concentration of Neolithic menhirs and dolmens.
Landscape
The circular trail Le chemin des vieilles pierres begins at La Sansonnière near the town hall. The 14.5-kilometre circular trail passes through a rural, hilly and partly wooded landscape in a region with a rich megalithic heritage.
In Saint-Georges-des-Sept-Voies, 350 hectares of woodland are spread across the entire area, providing residents and walkers with a distinctly rural setting.
Art
The Hélice Terrestre in Gennes-Val-de-Loire is a monumental contemporary sculpture that emerged from the artist Jacques Warminski’s encounter with the world of troglodytes. It consists of two areas created at the same time: an underground area carved entirely out of tuffeau and an open-air area shaped from concrete. When visiting the Hélice Terrestre, visitors move through the artwork itself, engaging all their senses.
