Culture and History

The parish church of Saint-Hilaire was built between 1905 and 1908 and consecrated on 5 January 1908. It has a single-nave nave, a transept, an apse and subsidiary apses, and is designed in the ogival style.

A stained-glass window in the parish church of Saint-Hilaire, created by the glass painter Clames, who came from Anjou, was declared a historic monument in 1989 and depicts the massacre at the Croix des Martyrs.

The Croix des Martyrs commemorates an event during the War in the Vendée in which 22 residents of Montilliers, including women and children, were shot on 5 April 1794. The priory formerly served political, healthcare and educational functions.

Recreation

The La Fontaine washhouse was built in 1838. In 2015, it was redesigned with new tree plantings, tables and pétanque courts; it can be reached via a footpath through the La Fontaine housing estate.

The Circuit des Prés Naiteaux is a circular trail of the Sentier de Promenade et de Randonnée (PR) type. The Les Prés Naiteaux recreational area has a pontoon for people with reduced mobility.

Cyanobacteria have been detected locally at the Plan d’eau de Montilliers; bathers are subject to precautionary measures under alert level 1.
