Culture and History

The Tour Saint-Pierre is the only surviving remnant of the former feudal castle that Foulques, Count of Anjou, had built in Chalonnes. Le Présidial on the quay on the Notre-Dame side was the former courthouse of the episcopal lords of Chalonnes.

The Église Saint-Maurille was restored in 1846–1847; its bell tower had to be repaired after the 1940 bombing. The former Cimetière des Malpavés in Chalonnes dates back to Roman times.

After the Canal du Layon opened in 1778, the quays of Chalonnes-sur-Loire served as loading points for Layon wines, which Dutch merchants bought there. Port Garou is one of the Loire ports of Chalonnes-sur-Loire established in the 19th century and has now been incorporated into the quays. Excavations at the Cimetière des Malpavés uncovered coins of Philip III, King of Spain, as well as Gallo-Roman sestertii.

The De Louet en Corniche hiking trail begins in Chalonnes-sur-Loire, is 13.5 km long, and takes approximately 4 hours and 30 minutes. The Vallée du Layon hiking trail also begins in Chalonnes-sur-Loire, is 14 km long, and takes approximately 4 hours.

Chalonnes-sur-Loire has a stop on La Loire à Vélo, a developed and signposted 300 km route that runs along lightly trafficked roads and cycle paths.
