Le Coudray-Macouard is a former fortified town situated on a limestone hilltop. During walks through its winding lanes, visitors can discover grand manor houses and châteaux behind high tuffeau stone walls and in the entrances to large gateways. The town’s troglodyte dwellings also bear witness to an unusual way of life.

Those considering Le Coudray-Macouard as a travel destination may wish to rent a holiday apartment there.

Culture and History

La Seigneurie du Bois is a 15th-century manor house that was enlarged in the 16th century. By prior appointment, the estate offers guided tours of the village and the manor house.

The Eglise Saint-Aubin was originally a chapel belonging to the feudal castle and became a parish church after the Wars of Religion. It preserves a 12th-century ogival vaulted bay with cylindrical ribs in the Plantagenet style. The church also houses a remarkable altarpiece and an extensive collection of statues.

Crafts

The Atelier de la Girouetterie offers self-guided tours with an information sheet. The weather vane maker demonstrates and explains the production steps, as well as the history of weather vanes. The workshop designs, restores and reproduces handcrafted weather vanes and signs made of copper, zinc and brass.
