Nature

The Plan d'eau des Monteaux is classified as an Espace Naturel Sensible. The Gravières et bois des Monteaux area comprises two bodies of water separated by a road, bordered by a forest to the north. Numerous migratory birds pass through the Réserve ornithologique des Monteaux from autumn to spring.

Along the Sentier ornithologique de l'étang des Monteaux, several observation huts allow discreet observation of the wildlife and plant life from different perspectives. The recreational area at the Plan d'eau des Monteaux has a playground and educational panels about the local wildlife and plant life. The Plan d'eau des Monteaux is accessible to anglers, and a hiking trail runs around it.

Culture and history

The Château des Coutures is a neoclassical manor house built between 1835 and 1841 in the style of a Palladian villa. The estate is partially listed as a Monument historique. The grounds, outbuildings and formal French garden are open to visitors.

The monumental equestrian statue “Archeval” was created by the sculptor Christian Renonciat. “Archeval” is a gigantic horse silhouette made of assembled metal tubes and symbolises the arrival in Saumur, the capital of equestrian arts.
