The Loire also shapes the town’s tourist activities, which include boat trips on the river. Port Saint-Maur is the starting point for the 21-kilometre canoe route La Ménitré–Les Ponts-de-Cé, which takes 4 hours and 40 minutes.
Culture and history
Port Saint-Maur is located opposite Glanfeuil Abbey and was an important shipping site in 1858. Local architecture includes the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste, a 19th-century neoclassical church.
Every summer, the Moulin de la Vierge opens its doors to local artists and visitors. The now-disused Chapelle du Moulin de la Vierge was built in 1908 on the site of a former windmill.
The Moulin du Goislard windmill also has a remarkable history: it was moved from Saint-Mathurin-sur-Loire to La Ménitré, collapsed after just a few metres during the relocation, and was subsequently rebuilt true to the original.
Paths and activities
The 15-kilometre circular route Sentier des Ponceaux takes in the former Loire riverbed’s polder landscapes, the Authion and characteristic bridges. The route passes through the canals of the Loire polder landscape, which can be crossed via numerous stone or slate bridges.
Authion à vélo is considered an alternative route to the Loire à vélo through the Authion Valley. In La Ménitré, Boule de Fort is known as a local sport.
Local culture and culinary delights
The Fabrique des Bières d’Anjou invites visitors to discover the ingredients and production of La Piautre. La Piautre is brewed from organically grown malt and hops. On Saturdays at 3 p.m., the Fabrique des Bières d’Anjou offers tours of the malting house, brewery and distillery by prior reservation.
