Nature
The Coteaux du Pont-Barré Regional Nature Reserve lies downstream from Pont Barré and overlooks the Layon Valley and its vineyards. It covers more than 8 hectares and is home to 420 plant species, including 50 endangered species.
Hiking and Cycling
The “Circuit du coteau de Pierre Bise” circular route is a 12.5 km hiking trail starting at the sports hall. Another hiking route is the 11 km “Circuit de la Forêt au Layon” circular trail, which begins at the Maison du Tourisme. The “VTT Le Layon–Bonnezeaux 6 A” mountain-bike route is 19 km long, passes through the forest of Beaulieu-sur-Layon and follows the banks of the Layon on the return journey.
Culture and History
The church of Beaulieu-sur-Layon is a neo-Gothic building consecrated on 22 November 1845. The Logis Desmazières dates from the 18th century. Its gable is supported by fluted pilasters, while pairs of horseshoe-shaped dormer windows characterize the roof.
The Maison Gouin is a half-timbered building. Its gabled façade, projecting roof, dormer windows and monumental portal are reminiscent of medieval houses. During restoration work around 1900, documents were found in a chimney of the Maison Gouin, the oldest of which date back to 1435.
The Chapelle de Notre-Dame preserves the choir of the former church. In 1856, building materials were sold to construct a new church because of its poor condition; the surviving choir was converted into a chapel.
Viticulture
The Layon wine-growing region has a winemaking tradition dating back more than 15 centuries. Chenin is the appellation’s only grape variety. Local winegrowers offer the opportunity to taste “Coteaux du Layon Village” wine.
