Drain: holiday apartments and houses
Drain combines the Boires de la Loire with chapels, local history and vineyards. The “Circuit découverte des boires de Drain” is an easy, 2.8 km, one-hour walk marked in red, starting at the car park of the Beauregrêt municipal campsite. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Drain can include this in their travel plans.
Nature
The “Circuit découverte des boires de Drain” is closed when the Loire is in flood. Along the route are sandbanks that are suitable for observing typical river birds such as herons, great egrets, ducks and waders. The circular walk leads past the Boires de la Rompure and de la Nigaudière and along extensive natural meadows beside the Loire.
A 2.5 km nature trail has been created at the Boires de la Rompure et de la Nigaudière to raise awareness of biodiversity and its protection. The “Entre Loire et Vignoble” route crosses the Loire floodplain with its boires, former secondary channels of the Loire. During seasonal floods, they fill up again, creating important wetlands that serve as spawning grounds for fish and breeding grounds for birds. The route also passes the historic Pont Romain and runs through hamlets with traditional architecture combining local stone and tuffeau.
Culture and history
The Art et Chapelles trail combines contemporary art with religious heritage and includes the Chapelle des Galloires and the Chapelle Sainte Apolline in Drain. During the trail, a guide accompanies visitors in each participating chapel as they discover it. For more than 20 years, Art et Chapelles has organised a trail every summer showcasing contemporary art in chapels in the Maine-et-Loire département.
The “Mémoire de village” historical tour in Drain leads through the town centre and presents the stories, people and places that have shaped Drain. It is free and can be completed independently.
The Chapelle Sainte Apolline is a 19th-century chapel built by the architect Moriceau, overlooking the Loire Valley. It stands on the site of the former Notre-Dame church, of which only the choir remains. The chapel was restored in 2019, including repairs to the façades, entrance door and bell turret.
Wine
At the Domaine des Galloires, visitors can learn about winemaking and work in the vineyards, enjoy a tasting cellar and take in views of the Loire Valley and the vineyard slopes. The Domaine des Galloires offers a bookable, self-guided walk through the vineyards, optionally accompanied by a gourmet picnic.
At the Domaine des Galloires, the Toublanc family has cultivated the vineyards for seven generations and produces wines from the Muscadet, Coteaux d’Ancenis, Anjou and Crémant de Loire appellations.
