Culture and History

The Church of Saint-Pierre and Saint-Romain in Savennières has been classified as a historic monument since 1840. The former presbytery of Savennières has been documented in written records since 1447. Its preserved salon features eight painted textile panels with a total length of 19.40 metres. The salon with its painted canvas panels can be visited during the opening hours of the Troismurs+ gallery or by arrangement with the municipal administration, with or without a guided tour.

The Oratoire Saint-Romain can be viewed from the public road at Carrefour Leglou in the direction of Route de La Possonnière. Over the centuries, the Church of Saint-Aubin in Épiré was the seat of an important parish documented since the 11th century. The Battle of Roche aux Moines took place in Savennières in 1214 between the Capetian and Plantagenet dynasties.

Wine and Local Life

The Fief du Vau, founded in 1495 and transformed into the Château des Vaults in the 17th century, is home to one of Savennières' oldest and most important wine estates; throughout the year, it offers tours of the park and vineyard, as well as tastings and sales in the wine cellar. Domaine Taillandier welcomes visitors to the cellar for an introduction to the vineyard followed by a guided tasting, by reservation.

The Confluence Gallery is open all day during the Sunday market and offers creations by the artists present at the time. The La Concorde club organizes five boules de fort competitions, a pétanque competition, and a belote competition every year.

Landscape and Trails

The Savennières plateau, with its diverse landscapes, links the valley slopes with the extensive bocage landscape west of Angers. La Pierre Bécherelle is a 15-metre-high rock in Épiré, opposite the northern tip of Béhuard Island. Parc du Fresne and its plane tree provide a preferred habitat for numerous birds and mammals, including rare bat species. Recreational fishing continues to be practised on the Loire from the bank or by boat.

The signposted Loire à Vélo cycling route passes through Savennières; coming from Bouchemaine, the Loire à Vélo follows the Loire below the renowned wine-growing area. The “Sur les coteaux de Savennières” route is suitable for cycling and begins at Place du Mail in Savennières.
