In the Villuercas-Ibores-Jara UNESCO Global Geopark, the Risco de La Villuerca is both a geological educational trail and a geosite. From there, panoramic views open up over the characteristic Appalachian relief.

Nature and landscapes
Monfragüe National Park is located approximately in the centre of the province of Cáceres, in the triangle formed by Plasencia, Trujillo and Cáceres. The park offers opportunities to observe black storks, Egyptian vultures, vultures and Spanish imperial eagles.
The Villuercas-Ibores-Jara UNESCO Global Geopark covers 2,544 square kilometres in the southeast of the province of Cáceres and lies between the catchment areas of the Tagus and Guadiana rivers. The Risco de La Villuerca reaches a height of 1,601 metres there and offers views of mountain ranges, valleys, rolling plains known as rañas, and Guadalupe.
The province of Cáceres has five UNESCO-recognised destinations or protected areas: the city of Cáceres, the Monastery of Guadalupe, the Monfragüe and Tajo Internacional biosphere reserves, and the Villuercas-Ibores-Jara UNESCO Geopark.
History and culture
The old town of Cáceres is a nine-hectare urban ensemble surrounded by a 1,174-metre-long wall. Trujillo is home to a medieval town surrounded by a city wall with seventeen towers. Every Easter Sunday, the Chíviri Festival, recognised as an event of tourist interest, takes place there in the Plaza Mayor.
The Monasterio de San Jerónimo de Yuste was the last residence of Emperor Charles V. During a visit, the Casa-Palacio, the church and the Gothic and Renaissance cloisters can be viewed.
The Museo de la Coria is located in the former Convento de San Francisco el Real and presents important stages in the discovery of the New World. In Hervás, the Palacio de los Dávila, a civic palace dating from the mid-18th century, now houses a house museum and a public library.
Near Alcántara, the Puente Romano de Alcántara was built over the Tagus River, the ancient Tagus Aurifer, in the 2nd century AD. The San Benito de Alcántara complex consists of a monastery, a church and a hostel; its Gothic cloister was built over an Arab fortress.
The 48 catalogued dolmens of Valencia de Alcántara form one of the most significant megalithic groups in Spain and Europe. They date from the Neolithic to the Chalcolithic, that is, from the 4th to the 3rd millennium BC.
Among the attractions of Plasencia is the Museo Etnográfico Textil “Pérez Enciso”. The Museo Vostell Malpartida allows the organisation of group visits, individual visits and guided visits.
Routes and activities
The Camino de Santiago routes in the province of Cáceres comprise the three routes Vía de la Plata, Vía de la Estrella and Camino Mozárabe de las Hurdes. The Ruta de Carlos V is an officially approved, linear hiking trail covering 27.7 kilometres from Tornavacas to Jarandilla de la Vera.
Los Pilones features natural pools carved into the rock by water erosion. The path from the visitor centre to the pools is 2.5 kilometres long, suitable for all age groups and families, and has no significant changes in elevation.
Every year, Valencia de Alcántara hosts an outdoor hike called “La Transfrontera”. The banks of the Tagus near Alcántara offer numerous opportunities for sport fishing.
Cuisine and regional culture
A culinary route dedicated to Torta del Casar begins in Casar de Cáceres, the cheese’s place of origin, and leads to the dairies where it is produced. The Museo del Queso in Casar de Cáceres presents the history and production process of Torta del Casar.
The Centro de Interpretación de la Cañada Real Soriana Occidental “Casa Pinotes” presents the area’s pastoral and transhumant culture.
