Cambrón: Water, Routes and Hurdan Architecture

Cambrón brings together water landscapes, historic routes and the architectural heritage of Las Hurdes. The Las Hurdes Water and Environmental Interpretation Centre is located in the Alquería de Cambrón, in a former olive mill. Well-preserved Hurdana buildings can also be seen along the streets. This places the landscape, regional history and traditional architecture side by side within a short thematic sequence.

Nature and Water

The Las Hurdes Water and Environmental Interpretation Centre explores water as a defining element of the landscape of Las Hurdes. It presents waterfalls, meanders, natural pools and small watercourses. The exhibition thus makes visible the different forms in which water appears in the landscape. The same centre also explains the traditional process of olive-oil production. Information panels introduce the wildlife found in the region, including the Iberian ibex, the least weasel, the genet and the wild boar.

The topics therefore range from natural water formations and olive processing to regional wildlife. At the centre, however, nature observation and regional tradition are not treated separately; instead, they come together in the exhibition's different areas.

Hiking

Stage 4 of the Camino Mozárabe de Las Hurdes between Caminomorisco and Arrolobos reaches Cambrón via a route that crosses the Puente de Cambrón and leads to the Water and Environmental Interpretation Centre. It passes through Huerta, Cambrón and Cambroncino; the route is 25.42 kilometres long. Signposts provide orientation along the entire route.

This means that different features can be compared when choosing a route: the stage connects several of the places mentioned, crosses the bridge and ends at the Water and Environmental Interpretation Centre, while the Ruta Pisá de la Mora is designed as a circular route. Length, route format and course therefore provide separate criteria for planning a day of hiking.

Architectural Heritage

The Puente de Cambrón was built in the 13th century to allow people and livestock to cross during high water. It was built from stone and slate according to the principles of traditional Las Hurdes architecture. The bridge is located next to the Water and Environmental Interpretation Centre. Its function during high water, the materials used and its proximity to the centre bring together transport history, landscape and regional building traditions at this location.

Well-preserved Hurdana buildings can be seen along the streets; they are another visible expression of the region's architectural heritage. Their presence complements the single historic bridge with architectural impressions found in the townscape of Cambrón.

Further Routes

The Ruta Pisá de la Mora is a circular route that follows the Vereda del Correo from the tourist information office in Caminomorisco towards La Huerta and Cambrón. For this route, visitors leave their car in designated parking areas and then begin the hike on a marked trail. The two routes described therefore differ not only in their format but also in their respective starting points.
