El Torno: Memory, Nature and Hiking Trails

El Torno turns its gaze simultaneously towards memory and landscape. At the Mirador de la Memoria, sculptures commemorate those forgotten after the Spanish Civil War; they were created by Francisco Cedenilla and installed in 2008.

History and Memory

At the same viewpoint, memorial events are held for the victims and those persecuted under Francoism and during the Spanish Civil War. One of these commemorative events takes place on the first Sunday in October in memory of the guerrilla fighters who defended the mountains of the Jerte Valley. In the surroundings of El Torno, there are around one hundred stone huts that are several centuries old. In the past, they served as shelters for shepherds, goatherds and farmers; today, they are considered a picturesque attraction of the town.

Nature and Trails

The linear PR-CC 7 hiking trail is of medium difficulty, measures 8.3 km each way and 16.6 km in total; the estimated duration is 5 hours and 15 minutes. It begins at Fuente el Regajo in El Torno and ends at Canchal del Maqui. Along its route, it passes through cherry orchards and grazing landscapes as well as traditional dry-stone structures, including chozos, majadas and enclosures.

The linear route, with a fixed start and endpoint, can be contrasted with a circular trail as a separate form of planning. Distance, route type and estimated duration provide different guidance when planning a day of hiking.

Water and Views

The Los Pozos natural pool is located in the Hoya de las Canales gorge, which is also called Garganta del Lugar. From El Torno, it can be reached by road in the direction of Cabezabellosa; from the car park, a path of approximately 100 m leads to the natural bathing area. The Mirador de la Memoria offers far-reaching views over the Jerte Valley and the Sierra de Tormantos. The viewpoint also has a picnic area and an information panel about the nearby El Cerro climbing area.

Culture in the Town

The Iglesia Ntra. Sª Virgen de la Piedad was built in the mid-16th century. It houses a Hispano-Flemish wood carving of Our Lady of Mercy from the 15th century.

Another Hiking Trail

The PR-CC 8 Garganta La Puria – Arroyo Labradillo hiking trail is a 12.55 km circular route. It follows the Arroyo Labradillo, passes a viewpoint and runs through oak groves and meadows towards El Torno.
