Horcajo – Nature, Trails and Traditional Architecture

Horcajo is located where the Río Horcajo meets a gorge rich in water that descends from the Sierra. Landscape

The terraces around Horcajo are home to chestnut and olive trees, as well as legumes and fruit trees. Horcajo can be reached via the CC-156: at kilometre 8.5, turn right onto the road that ends in the hamlet. At the entrance to Horcajo there is a natural swimming pool that is easily accessible. During the summer months of July and August, the water area of Horcajo’s swimming spot is considered to be formed by a weir approximately 10 m long. Poza de la pesquera nueva is a swimming area where you can enjoy the landscape and cool off in summer.

Trails and viewpoints

The hiking route to Despoblado del Moral begins at Horcajo’s square, which serves as a car park. The route is considered easy and family-friendly and is approximately 2 km long one way; it runs along the right bank of the Río Horcajo. The Lombo de las Viñas hiking trail begins in Horcajo and ends in El Gasco. The Mirador El Lombo de Las Viñas offers views across the Horcajo valley. It can be reached via an approximately 5 km-long track from Horcajo or on foot along the Lombo de las Viñas route. Culture

Horcajo preserves traditional houses with balconies supported by slate, slate floors and whitewashed façades decorated in shades of blue or brown. In the surroundings of Horcajo, the abandoned settlement of El Moral is an example of the traditional architecture of Las Hurdes. It is regarded as a second settlement built by shepherds; visiting it is associated with the Middle Ages. Horcajo is home to the Iglesia de San Francisco de Asís. Horcajo’s local feast day falls on 15 July and is named San Francisco de Asís.
