Ladrillar: Nature, Trails and Hurdan Architecture

Ladrillar lies on a hillside amid mountains covered with pine, chestnut and oak trees. Its surroundings feature streams and natural pools, including pools along the Ladrillar River. Between the hillside landscape, water and traditional architecture, the main focuses of a trip can be clearly experienced side by side.

Nature and Trails

The Ruta La Antigua connects Ladrillar and Aceitunilla and begins in Ladrillar. Along the Verea del Risco Gordo, the trail passes through landscapes with pine trees, holm oaks and strawberry trees, crosses three streams and offers panoramic views of Cabezo. Mount La Hastiala is located near Ladrillar. The Árbol Singular Enebro de Las Mestas is a protected specimen tree in the hamlet belonging to the municipality of Ladrillar and is 14 metres tall. The different trail features offer a clear choice when planning between connections, woodland, stream crossings and viewpoints.

The two trail references each emphasise different aspects: the Ruta La Antigua is defined by its connection between two villages, while the Verea del Risco Gordo describes the landscape through its tree species, stream crossings and panoramic views. La Hastiala complements this description as a mountain near Ladrillar, while the Enebro de Las Mestas is presented as an individual protected natural feature with a precise height specification.

Water and Natural Pools

The Charco de la Olla is located near the municipality of Ladrillar, by the bridge; during the warmer months, locals and tourists use it as a recreational area. In Las Mestas, there are natural pools formed by the confluence of the Batuecas and Ladrillar rivers. Trails, waterways and pools each provide their own thematic focus for planning your days.

The water features therefore include both a recreational area by a bridge and pools whose formation is linked to the confluence of two rivers. Together with the streams and pools along the Ladrillar River, this creates a landscape in which several forms of flowing and collected water can be seen side by side.

Culture and Village Character

A visit to Ladrillar’s old town centre is recommended; here, arches, passageways and traditional Hurdan houses blend into the landscape. The Centro de Interpretación e Información de Las Hurdes is located in Riomalo de Arriba, an outlying settlement belonging to Ladrillar, in a typical house of traditional Hurdan architecture. The centre covers local crafts, gastronomy, festivals and architecture. It is explored on a guided tour supplemented by exhibition panels.

Riomalo de Arriba is considered one of the best examples of Hurdan vernacular architecture and was built from slate, slate rock, earth and wood. The architectural ensemble forms a compact settlement with steep, winding and often very narrow streets that adapt to the terrain. The Parroquia San Isidoro church is located in the wider regional area around Ladrillar.

The village character therefore brings together different forms of architectural heritage: the old town centre with its arches and passageways, the typical house housing the information centre, and the compact ensemble of Riomalo de Arriba. The guided tour and exhibition panels complement the visible houses, streets and materials with the topics covered there: crafts, gastronomy, festivals and architecture.
