Guadalupe combines an important religious architectural ensemble with historic routes, Mudéjar architecture and scenic trails. The Real Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. The monastery includes a Mudéjar church and a Mudéjar cloister dating from the 14th and 15th centuries; its sacristy is known for a series of paintings by Zurbarán.
Culture
Around the monastery, Guadalupe reveals several layers of its history. The Arco del Tinte is a Mudéjar gate that formerly led to Guadalupe’s dye works and was part of the medieval fortifications. Casa de Gil Cordero is traditionally regarded as the house of the shepherd to whom the Virgin Mary is said to have first appeared in the late 13th or early 14th century. The Iglesia Nueva o de la Santísima Trinidad is an 18th-century building constructed between 1730 and 1736, with a Baroque portal.
Characteristic architectural forms include the Casas Porticadas: traditional two-storey houses with chestnut-wood beams, whose arcades are associated with the trade shaped by the pilgrimage. Calle de Ruperto connects the Fuente de los Tres Chorros with the Arco de las Eras and is characterized by Serrano architecture with wooden arcades. On the Plazuela de los Tres Chorros stands a 15th-century fountain that was formerly connected to the Arca del Agua water-supply network. The Galería Mudéjar, also known as the „former chaplains’ houses“, is a 15th-century arcade gallery in the Mudéjar style.
The museums are also closely connected with the monastery. The Museo de Bordados is located in the former monastic refectory and displays part of the monastery’s extensive collection of sacred ornaments, most of which were produced in the monastic workshops during the Hieronymite period. The Museo de Miniados is located in the northern wing of the Mudéjar cloister. The Museo de Pintura y Escultura is housed in the monastery’s former wardrobe and includes, among other works, eight small paintings by Zurbarán, Goya’s „Confesión en la cárcel“ and three paintings by El Greco. The Arco de Sevilla was part of the monastery’s first defensive belt, laid out in the 16th century, and is known for its floral decoration and the surrounding vernacular architecture.
Nature
The Mirador del Parque Constitución offers views of the monastery and its church. The seven-century-old hydraulic structure Arca del Agua is also located in the area around Guadalupe. The Río Guadalupejo runs as a protected ecological and biodiversity corridor within the Natura 2000 network. Batán de Arriba is a beautifully restored mill used as a rural residence.
The Arca del Agua can be reached via the road from Guadalupe to Navalmoral de la Mata and then via a forest track branching off from the pass of the Ermita del Humilladero.
Routes and Landscapes
The routes around Guadalupe combine religious history with varied landscapes. The Ruta del Humilladero Altamira begins at the Plaza de Santa María de Guadalupe and follows an old pilgrimage route from Castile known as the Camino del Agua. This route offers panoramic views of Guadalupe and its surroundings. The Ruta de las Ermitas is part of the Camino Natural de las Villuercas and leads to a hermitage built in the 15th century and restored in 1945 in the Gothic style.
The Ruta de los Molinos begins at the Plaza Mayor and follows the course of the Río Guadalupe to the Molino de la Herrería. River fishing for trout and tench is listed as an option on the Ruta de los Molinos. The Camino Real de Guadalupe is a 62.9-kilometre route through the Villuercas-Ibores-Jara Geopark. Starting points, route layout and the stated length provide different reference points for personal day planning.
