Segura de Toro: Verracos, Presses and Views

Segura de Toro makes its past visible in the townscape and complements it with viewpoints, a chestnut grove, bathing spots and hiking trails. In the Plaza Mayor stands the large Toro, or large Vettonian verraco. The granite-carved figure dates from around the 6th century BC and is approximately two metres long.

Culture and History

The small verraco is also located in Segura de Toro’s Plaza Mayor. It is a replica; the original is housed in the Museo Provincial de Cáceres. At the entrance to the town, a stele with inscriptions and engravings commemorates the town’s history. Remains of an old Templar castle have also been preserved.

The SL-CC 101 Lagares Celtas hiking trail starts in Segura de Toro and leads to Celtic presses carved into the rock. They presumably served to collect liquids such as wine, oil or cider. In this way, the trail combines a concrete exploration of the landscape with a look at an older use of the rocks, without diminishing the historical uniqueness of the presses.

Landscape

The natural landscape includes the Castaños del Temblar grove on the banks of the Arroyo del Temblar. Five monumental chestnut trees stand there. The grove is on private land; access is restricted from 15 October to 15 January.

On the slopes of the Montes de Tras la Sierra, within the municipal area of Segura de Toro, the Mirador del Canchal de la Cigüeña is located at an altitude of 676 metres. The viewpoint offers panoramic views of the town and the Valle del Ambroz. It can be reached via a wooden footbridge and also provides views as far as the Gabriel y Galán Reservoir.

Water and Trails

Near Segura de Toro there are two natural swimming pools fed by the crystal-clear waters of the Garganta Grande. They are located beside the road and have a parking area. They consist of an upper and a lower pool; in the lower pool, the water warms naturally as it flows over a large stone.

The SL-CC 93 Castaños del Temblar circular trail starts in Segura de Toro and is 3.23 kilometres long. The SL-CC 98 La Burila circular trail leads from Aldeanueva del Camino to Segura de Toro, approaches the Garganta Grande and returns by a different route.
