Cabezabellosa – Hermitage, Viewpoint and Paragliding

Cabezabellosa combines an elevated viewpoint, paths to historic religious sites, a distinctive landscape and vibrant regional culture. This means the town can be experienced from different perspectives: as a destination for a walk to the hermitage, as a starting point for views across the surrounding area and as a setting for recurring local traditions.

Nature and Trails

The Mirador de la Ermita del Castillo is located at an altitude of 870 metres. Access is on foot via an approximately 500-metre uphill stretch along a narrow path to the Ermita Nuestra Señora del Castillo. The altitude of the viewpoint and the character of the path give this excursion a distinct landscape-focused character. Another route leads to the Roble del Acarreadero, a tree more than 500 years old that is designated as an Árbol Singular de Extremadura. This places a viewpoint and such a tree side by side as different destinations.

At Pico Pitolero, there is a free-flight launch site on the northeast side. Cabezabellosa and Pico Pitolero are considered one of the best places for paragliding in the province of Cáceres. Pico Pitolero adds another landscape aspect connected with free flight to the trails and viewpoint. The destinations mentioned differ in terms of trail character, altitude and type of activity, and can therefore be planned separately as part of a day.

Hermitage and Parish Church

The Ermita Nuestra Señora del Castillo can be reached on foot from the centre of Cabezabellosa in less than one kilometre; a prepared car park is located about 500 metres away. The hermitage dates from the 18th century. Inside, there is an altarpiece depicting the Tree of Jesse.

The parish church of San Lorenzo Mártir dates from the 17th century. Together, the hermitage and parish church represent two different historical periods within the religious architecture of Cabezabellosa. Visiting both sites therefore combines not only a walk through the town but also the viewing of two independent buildings.

Washhouses and Local History

The restored traditional washhouse “Regajal” is located 100 metres from Calle de la Iglesia. The “Las Huérfanas” washhouse is next to Calle Fuente. Both sites form part of the traditional everyday and local history, but are situated on different streets and each serve as a separate reference point in the townscape. Their locations make the washhouses visible as separate stops for exploration.

Jornadas del Cabrero

The Jornadas del Cabrero is a recurring event. Workshops are offered as part of it, and traditional dishes such as Migas de pastor can also be sampled. Workshops and regional cuisine give the event two distinct focal points. Alongside the religious sites, washhouses and landscape destinations, a regularly recurring cultural event is therefore also part of the picture of Cabezabellosa.
