Brozas is a place whose historical and artistic heritage is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category Conjunto Histórico (Historic Ensemble). The historic ensemble has a distinctly medieval urban structure. The Church of Santa María la Mayor de la Asunción was classified in 1988 as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category Monumento (Monument). It combines Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements. It also has three long naves with star-shaped rib vaults featuring ridge ribs. This allows architectural analysis to consider stylistic forms and the layout of the church interior together.

Construction of the Church of Santos Mártires began in 1495 and was completed in the 1960s. Another historic complex is the castle palace of the Encomienda Mayor de Alcántara. Following a construction history spanning the 13th to the 17th century, it preserves a keep and a bastioned wall. The castle palace is privately owned; the exterior area is freely accessible. Church architecture, long construction periods and fortified architecture thus provide distinct cultural focal points.

Nature

The Charca de Brozas is designated as a Parque Periurbano de Conservación y Ocio (peri-urban park for conservation and recreation) and has an ornithological observatory. Birdwatching is possible at the Charca de Brozas in all four seasons. Among other species, spoonbills, coots, great crested grebes, kingfishers, black-winged stilts and little grebes can be observed there. The combination of seasonal context, observation site and species list makes this natural area particularly easy to plan for.

The Embalse de Brozas is designated as a ZEPA, that is, a Special Protection Area for birds. The reservoir is known for winter gatherings of cranes. There is also a colony of cattle egrets at the Embalse de Brozas. The Charca and Embalse therefore represent two distinct nature topics that can be compared according to location and season.

Tradition and Trails

The San Antón tradition in Brozas includes the Cordón dance, also known as “Torcido,” in which people dance around a pole decorated with coloured ribbons. This named dance form complements the buildings and protected areas with a cultural custom that has its own designation and clearly defined action.
