Culture and History

The Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Buen Varón is protected as an asset of cultural interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) in the “Monument” category. One of its entrance doors is a rare example of Late Romanesque architecture in Extremadura; the church also has a Baroque altarpiece. The Cruz de la Nava, a granite cross dating from the late 16th century, stands on Plaza Capilla. The Ermita del Cristo Bendito del Valle, which was already mentioned in 1594, lies on the road to Cilleros.

The Convento del Espíritu Santo was founded by Pablo Pérez, a resident of Hoyos. Ruins of this convent remain; the church and the foundations of the cloister, with its entrance doors, can still be identified. The greatest concentration of aristocratic and palatial buildings in Hoyos is located on Calle Obispo Álvarez de Castro.

Nature and Routes

Pine, chestnut and oak forests dominate the peaks around Hoyos. The Piscina Natural de Hoyos has a large pool. It lies on the Rivera de Acebo and is fed by the Santa Catalina and Razas streams.

The GR 10 E-09 Hoyos-Acebo route is 6 km long, has a moderate difficulty level and leads from Hoyos via Avenida de Extremadura. The SL-CC 211 Camino de Hoyos a Trevejo hiking trail connects Hoyos and Trevejo, is 7 km long, also has a moderate difficulty level and begins at the end of Calle Obispo Álvarez de Castro in Hoyos. It runs along medieval, entirely public, paved paths between old stone walls and oak groves.
